Chapter Twenty-Four
It’s often said the male mind
Is easiest to breach
No secret plan that’s made by man
Is out of woman’s reach
So Marcus followed after suite
That ev’ning at a ball
Where Shelah sat across the room
And quickly guessed it all
*
He had no clue how much she knew
While planning his escape
It took him blind that night to find
Her waiting at the gate
He tip-toed out with ne’er a doubt
His exit had been clean
When from his right at shoulder height
She came just like a queen
*
She wore a coat with hair of goat
Contrived for work and wear
With lustrous silk the shade of milk
She fastened up her hair
She had a steed of swiftest breed
She stole from Marcus’ stall
She’d bribed the guard who roamed the yard
With liquor from the hall
*
Young Marcus’ mind was in a bind
To know why she was here
But in his soul he felt a glow
That helped to ease his fear
He made a grin then rubbed his chin
To keep his smile hid
The princess’ eyes made soft replies
By batting each its lid
*
She said: “I want to ride with you”
He said: “What do you know?”
She said: “You have some task to do”
He said: “You cannot go,”
She said: “I know you’re facing death,”
He said: “I am a king,”
She said: “If you will let me ride,
I’ll wear your wedding ring.”
*
Her face grew soft and Marcus coughed
While stumbling in retreat
But then at length he found the strength
To stop his wayward feet
He said “the path is filled with wrath,
I go to meet the dead:
To grant my lief a short reprieve
And pay his dues instead”
*
A moments pause restrained their jaws
It seemed like half a week
But when at last the silence passed
The girl was first to speak
Her tender throat released a quote
That sparkled like a gem
“If you are there,” she said with care
“Then that is where I am”
*
“Then that is where you’ll always be,”
He said without a start
“To be my bride you must reside
within my very heart
I can’t expect the least respect
From one who walks away
The only face I dare embrace
Is one that comes to stay”
*
Her cheeks grew dark and Caesar Mark
At first thought she was mad
But when her lips did backward flips
He knew that she was glad
The starting kiss was half the bliss
He thought it would be then
So with a sigh he winked his eye
And kissed her once again
